It is the patient we are treating and their lives we are changing.

I aspire to be an outstanding surgeon and a medical device inventor. With a fulfilling undergraduate experience working on numerous orthopedic related projects, I seek to apply my engineering knowledge into the development of clinical products that are not only innovative, but practical and patient centric. As a doctor-engineer, my future practice will be constantly challenged and motivated by an inquisitive mind – one that seeks to shape and improve our current healthcare practices.

To make a difference in healthcare, physicians can no longer just be doctors. They must be engineers, researchers, administrators, policymakers, and so much more.

As a physician-engineer, I fervently believe that the future of medicine lies in integrating diverse perspectives and collaborating internationally to produce innovative healthcare solutions. Learning at Duke-NUS not only challenges me academically, but also exposes me to the wide spectrum of roles physicians have in healthcare and motivates me to become a future leader in medicine. Whether it's through educational campaigns, cutting edge orthopedic devices, or novel health policy changes, I hope to improve the lives of my patients any way I can help.

I grew up in a family of doctors so I found that passion for medicine very early on.

It helps me because I am surrounded by people who can teach me what I need to know, which is discipline, drive and enthusiasm.

My Aspirations? What I hope is to become a good representative of Duke-NUS, make my seniors proud and continue the pioneer spirit and be a leader in whatever I choose to do and hope that one day I can come back to Duke-NUS to impart my knowledge to my future juniors.

Sze Min Lek

Class of 2015

Medicine is a calling, a passion and a journey of discovery of oneself and what one has to offer to society. To be someone more and bigger than one self, to be a friend and a healer to a fellow human being that inspired me to pursue medicine. It would be my privilege and honour to walk with my patients and their loved ones through the trying times and to always go that extra mile for their needs. Beyond our medical skills, I believe that doctors are trained to be individuals with unparalleled compassion as while we might not always be able to heal, we can always comfort.

Sze Min's Profile

Bachelor of Business Administration, National University of Singapore
Vice Chair & Judging Director – NUS Entrepreneurship Society
Volunteer, BEADS – Patient Care Center
Student Researcher, Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases on Dengue Fever Infections

Agnes Chao

Class of 2015

The faces, the people, and the stories behind each patient are what inspire me to pursue medicine. Beyond medical knowledge and clinical skills, I believe emotional endurance and empathy are what sets a good physician apart from any other physician. I want to be a physician that can bring comfort and assurance where there is fear, and someone that can bring hope where there is disappointment. You may not be able to change a patient's physical or medical prognosis, but you can influence his or her emotional prognosis, and that is the very least I hope to bring to my patients.

Agnes' Profile

B.Sc (Neuroscience), Duke University
Research Assistant, Center for Cognitive Neuroscience: Cabeza Lab
President, Duke InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

Sarah Kim

Class of 2015

I believe the practice of medicine is one of the most comprehensive, delicate and passionate forms of art. Every patient has a unique story to share beyond just numbers and images. I want to see the patient in the context of his own life, outside the hospital framework. I do not want to forget that I am not dealing with a simple "case" but working with a "person" who has family, friends, dreams, expectations and personal qualities cherished in his life that deserve my utmost attention and respect. It is my responsibility to explore and unravel the story, though it may or may not lead to the panacea. And this challenging but rewarding journey is what fascinates me about the art of medicine.

Sarah's Profile

BA, History of Art
With minor in French Literature
Johns Hopkins University

Hiu Yeung Lau

Class of 2014

Why did I choose to study medicine? To put it simply, I started to understand the complexity and the intricacy of medicine in university."

I have always been involved in the science part of medicine but medicine is way more than the science behind it. I began to realize that for me to make an impact in medicine, it is important to start from the perspective of an empathetic physician having understood the challenges faced by patients and physicians at the front line. The purpose of medical research is to push medicine forward, and research will have meaning to patients only when it directly improves their care. That is where I am placing myself, and that is the reason why I chose to study medicine.

Hiu Yeung's Profile

B.Sc (Molecular & Cellular Biology), Johns Hopkins University
Research Officer, Singapore Institute of Clinical Sciences, A*Star

Josh Chua

Class of 2014

I get to connect with people at a much deeper level especially during times when they are down in doubts and at this point, relationships between people became really meaningful.

Medicine as a career provides me with a lot of opportunities to be doing many things and in the 21st century, seems to be like a very versatile career choice. I am really interested in pushing interests in scientific discoveries and also in the arts; peripheral to medicine but very integral in the medical arena. I think there is a lot of interaction between the arts and medicine that can be harnessed.

Josh's Profile

B.A, Business Admin (Accountancy), University of Washington
B.Sc, Biology & Physiology with Distinction, University of Washington
Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship
Research Assistant, Stanford University

Ku Chee Wai

Class of 2013

"Guerir quelquefois, soulager souvent, consoler toujours"

The old adage - Heal sometimes, relieve often and comfort always.

The indomitable instinct and urge to respond to the request for help from my patient led me to pursue medicine.

The doctor-patient relationship is at the core of my practice as I am convinced that the practice of medicine is both an art and a science. The human touch in medicine brings much more than just healing, but also comfort and reassurance to the spirit.

In addition, I believe that research is crucial in inspiring and guiding future practice of medical doctors. Even after so many years of work, there is still much to learn and discover. With a spirit of collaboration, we can create a brighter future for our patients.

Chee Wai's Profile

B.Sc (Hons) in Biological Science, Nanyang Technological University

As future doctors, we cannot operate alone. Instead we need strong collaboration from everyone else in the healthcare system."

The experiences I gained from growing up in Indonesia, a country with multicultural diversity, and from pursuing my education and career in the U.S. have made me realize how much I value diversity. Learning from diverse health care professional colleagues at Duke-NUS who bring their unique life perspectives will not only augment my experience but also will better prepare me to be a leader in global medicine. I am very excited of serving a country such as Singapore with its harmonious co-existence of multicultural diversity patients.
