Research Interests:

Genomic Oncology of Gastric Cancer

Our research group seeks to apply genomic technologies and information to address biological questions in cancer. Our work is primarily focused on the genomic characterization of gastric cancer (GC), the second leading cause of global cancer mortality. At present, relatively little is known about the specific oncogenic pathways that regulate different aspects of the gastric cancer phenotype. We hope to identify and understand these pathways, and ultimately use this knowledge to define rational therapeutic strategies for gastric cancer patients. Our group is also a key party in the Singapore Gastric Cancer Consortium. Some of our previous achievements include

a) Using a combination of array-based comparative genomic hybridization and expression profiling to show that gastric cancers can be subdivided into distinct molecular subtypes which distinct clinical outcomes (Tay et al., 2003);

b) Formation of an international Gastric Cancer Consortium comprising members from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, to pool expression data from >300 gastric tissues to determine conserved gene expression networks in GC (Aggarwal et al., 2006);

c) Identification of the gene PLA2G2A as a novel metastasis regulator in GC (Ganesan et al., 2008).

In addition to our work on GC, we also support and collaborate with many other cancer researchers on other cancers include lung, liver, and breast cancer. In addition, we also have a complementary research group at the Genome Institute of Singapore (www.gis.a-star.edu.sg) focused on microbial genomics of the Gram-negative pathogen Bukholderia pseudomallei.
