THE 6TH DUKE-NUS ALUMNI DIALOGUE

Medical Litigation: A Necessary Evil or a Vital Good with Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon

For the 6th Duke-NUS Alumni Dialogue, which was held on Friday, 10 May 2019, we were honoured to have Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon as our guest speaker.

With a turnout of over 70 guests, the dialogue was a spirited success. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the attendees (consisting of Duke-NUS alumni, students, faculty and staff, and distinguished leaders and professionals from the industry). This was possible with the generosity of our hosts Mr Tony Chew and Dr Melanie Chew, and the active participation of everyone who graced us with their presence.

The event kick-started with a chance for guests to catch up and interact with friends and colleagues. After dinner, we ushered in our dialogue with Chief Justice Menon, who offered valuable insight into the topic of medical litigation.

The array of issues and questions raised during the dialogue included the challenges involved in delegating and assuming responsibilities in medical litigation, how to approach managing human error and balancing doctors’ and patients’ interests in an increasingly litigious healthcare environment, and the effects of defensive medicine on sustainability.

The engaging and thought-provoking discussion concluded with the presentation of the Duke Stone to Chief Justice Menon as a token of appreciation.

Special thanks to the following alumni who took on key roles during the Dialogue:
- Dr Maverick Uy, Class of 2013, President, Duke-NUS Medical Alumni
- Dr Bianca Chan, Class of 2011
- Dr Maryanne Romero, Class of 2013
- Dr Anu Pandey, Class of 2015
