A proper balance between excitatory and inhibitory synapses is critical for information processing and plasticity in the brain. Failure to establish such a delicate balance has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders including autism and schizophrenia. In my talk, I will present our recent findings of the spatiotemporal mechanisms that govern excitatory and inhibitory synapse formation in the developing cortex, and briefly discuss the role of dopamine in early brain development.
