Ong Yen May
Media Specialist, Communications

The Insider: May is full of fun! We mean our media specialist Ong Yen May. Read and find out more!

Ola! So, the first thing you’d probably notice about me is my tan. It’s a badge of honour I wear from paddling. I love being out on the water! Currently, I paddle in a dragon boat with the Canadian Dragons Singapore, and in an outrigger canoe with the Singapore Paddle Club. There is nothing quite like sitting on the water with the wind in your face and the sun shining overhead, disconnected from the wired world we often find ourselves in. And, as a bonus, I get to compete both locally and internationally. The outrigger sprint championships are coming up in Tahiti in 2018. Isn’t that something to look forward to?

A lesser known fact about me is that I love to craft. My favourites are to knit and crochet. I’ve made many hats, scarves, shawls, blankets and toys. This has been an extremely useful skill to have for baby gifts since my friends have decided to start procreating like it’s going out of style. Also, I find knitting and crocheting cathartic, and it gives me the opportunity to tune out, slow down and chill with Netflix. Keeps my hands busy! Some of my projects have found their way to children’s hospitals with the hope of providing warmth and comfort to kids going through tough times.

When I’m not out on the water or scaling some rock climbing wall, I work in communications at Duke-NUS. I’m here to tell your story to anyone who would listen. I’m especially interested in your research stories. Armed with a research background mostly in neuroscience (pain), and cell and molecular biology, I hope to do your stories justice. Every day, I’m impressed by the level and quality of research being conducted at Duke-NUS, and am excited that I have the opportunity to get your word out there.

Finally, I’m a self-processed nerd/dork. Don’t believe me? Drop by my desk to check out my dork board. The punnier the better, the louder the groan elicited the better. Silly jokes about English, Math, Science… it’s all fair game. Stop by and say hello. I like talking about anything under the sun. If you want to get out on the water, do give me a shout! If you’re looking for a climbing partner, let me know. Really... ask me anything. Ask me about my dog (she’s a fat beagle by the way). I want to get to know you, I want to tell your story, be it in research, education or anything under the sun! Let’s talk!
