The Insider: Inline  skating is a sport widely practiced internationally. It is also known as “roller blading” due to the popular brand of inline skates, Rollerblade. We had a chat with Aaron from the NBD program who happened to be an avid roller blader. We decided to get him to share his passion for roller blading and perhaps a tip or two for the beginners to note. Along the way, we discovered some interesting things about Aaron that you might not have known.

1) Beneath that youthful face, Aaron is already a proud daddy of two young kids.

2) His first pair of rollerblades lasted him 15 years!

Every picture tells a story. This is so true, I simply love photos that have a story to tell or a feeling to portray. One look and I am back to the past. Or it could also signify hopes and dreams. A photograph could capture an exciting event, a moment of serendipity, the close bonds that friends and loved ones share and even the daily happenings around us.  I love how they remind me of the good and happy times I shared with others as well as bittersweet memories of the past.

1. Why Human Resources?

I actually started out as an economist but felt a strong need for more people-interaction, so I decided to explore a career in Human Resources (HR). The journey has been rewarding as I am passionate in people development and I have never looked back on my decision!

I first heard about Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School (Duke-NUS) from Dr. Doyle Graham during a Durham NC applicant day. Dr Graham, who is a Course Director at Duke-NUS, shared a great deal of information on Duke-NUS ranging from the campus building, students’ diversity, TeamLEAD curriculum and his own personal experiences of living abroad in Singapore. At that point, I knew I had to spend some time in Duke-NUS in the future, as a visiting student, staff or otherwise.

In 2007, as a second year PhD student in the National University of Singapore’s Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS), I received a rather interesting email: an invitation to become part of the university’s Faculty Stone project, a collection of 14 marble sculptures from all 14 faculties designed to represent the themes of our faculties, led by the eminent alumnus sculptor Chong Fah Cheong. Together with Felicia Loe, Mei Yee Ding, Selena Wu, and Wendy Wei Jia Soon, we began work on our own stone.
