EID Seminar Series - Roles for sex hormones, obesity and metabolism in the pathogenesis and severity of asthma and inuenza A virus: Uncovering novel therapeutic targets
Obesity is linked with severe lung disease, especially in females. Indeed, obese, female asthma is a recognised distinct subtype of severe asthma with poor therapeutic options. The mechanisms underpinning this association between obesity and severe
lung disease, and why the effects of obesity on asthma occur mainly in females, remains unknown. Here I will present data experimental and clinical studies conducted by our team that highlight interacting roles for obesity, metabolism and female sex hormones
in the immunobiology of asthma as well as in influenza A virus infection-induced outcomes.

Jay Horvat is a Professor of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of
Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute, Newcastle, Australia. His work
utilises a complementary combination of experimental in vivo mouse and human
ex vivo cell models in concert with clinical samples and data to uncover
novel mechanisms of respiratory disease. He has used this platform to
discover roles for novel factors and processes in, and highlight potential
new therapeutic targets for, lung disease, particularly severe asthma and
inuenza A virus infection.
