A regional centre of excellence for training and outreach

The Academy accelerates regional capacity building in pathogen genomic sequencing for both novel and endemic diseases. Through intensive week-long courses, country teams receive hands-on training in cutting-edge techniques for disease surveillance, pathogen genomics, bioinformatics, and data-driven decision-making.

Training programmes are tailored to regional priorities—including genomic epidemiology, arboviral diseases, whole genome sequencing, and metagenomics—as well as key use cases like tuberculosis and wastewater surveillance, and emerging threats such as mpox.

While most courses are held in Singapore, the Academy also delivers in-country training and is exploring new educational technologies and delivery models to expand its reach and foster cross-country knowledge exchange.

Primary focus areas:

In-person workshops

Our in-person workshops offer hands-on technical training across a range of pathogen genomic sequencing platforms and workflows—spanning both wet lab techniques and bioinformatics. Co-organised with national and international partners, these workshops are tailored to reflect regional priorities and emerging public health needs.

Beyond technical skills, the workshops foster trust and build a regional professional community. Each cohort forms active alumni networks that continue to share resources, troubleshoot challenges, and co-develop solutions across borders—creating a durable, collaborative network ready to respond to outbreak threats.

Virtual learning

In addition to in-person workshops, the Academy offers virtual training sessions and a webinar series to support continuous learning and cross-border knowledge exchange. These sessions cover a range of topics—including technical deep-dives, emerging trends and country case studies—bringing together regional experts and practitioners.

Scientific exchange

We welcome visiting scientists from across the region for targeted, hands-on training at our facilities. In collaboration with partners across Singapore, we design tailored programmes to meet specific skill and knowledge needs—ranging from field techniques to advanced genomic analysis.

One example is a collaboration with the Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Duke-NUS Emerging Infectious Diseases Programme (EID) to support the establishment of a dengue mosquito surveillance research programme in Nepal. As part of this initiative, we hosted two scientists from Nepal, equipping them with practical skills in mosquito trapping, identification, dissection, and genomic analysis.

Outbreak support

Our team has supported national and academic institutions in several countries (usually in-confidence) for sequencing pathogens in response to a local outbreak. These pathogens have included mpox, dengue, and chikungunya.

Read about a recent collaborative effort addressing a chikungunya outbreak in Sri Lanka and across the region here, in a commentary published by The Straits Times.
