There must be also more, for example, benches for those seniors walking, at least some places to sit. Ms Wee adds that community support is just as important and could be the greatest push to help seniors feel part of their neighbourhoods. It's a sentiment echoed by one researcher. The idea of going beyond ageing in place to this idea called ageing in networks, which is the idea that social support doesn't have to be limited to one specific place or neighbourhood. That not all seniors want to stay in the same place where they grew up for the their lives. They can go to do what they want to do. They can join their fishing club or whatever. If they are not mobile, then we can go to them.
Dr Lim says that for a scheme like Age Well Neighbourhoods to eventually scale up, Singapore must ensure that seniors can access all types of services island-wide. And the first step could be gathering national data on the kinds of activities seniors are joining in around the country.
