Strengthening Support towards Sustainable Caregiving -- CARE shares at HNF Caregiving Conference

Family caregivers are an integral part of the caregiving ecosystem for individuals who need care due to health reasons.  Assistant Professor Rahul Malhotra, Deputy Director and Head of Research of Duke-NUS Centre for Ageing Research and Education (CARE), shared about “Caregiving-related needs and the importance of social support for family caregivers” at the Home Nursing Foundation (HNF) Caregiving Conference on 6 Oct 2023 at Suntec Singapore, graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health.

In line with the Ministry of Health’s push for ageing in place, sustainable caregiving has become more important.  Recognising that it entails a multi-pronged approach with stakeholders such as healthcare practitioners, employers and social agencies, HNF organised this conference with the aim to strengthen the current caregiving support system.  The intent is that by enabling the sharing of caregiving best practices at the conference, ageing joyfully in the community can become a reality.

In his talk, CARE’s Dr. Malhotra presented empirical data from a study of family caregivers conducted in Singapore on the range of services or assistance that caregivers expressed would help them in caring for their care recipients, as well as the role played by social support from family and friends in influencing adverse outcomes, such as depressive symptoms and prolonged grief, among family caregivers.

At the same conference was CARE’s Senior Research Fellow Dr Ad Maulod who presented on how family caregivers negotiate their self-determination through filial care, which contributes to positive and negative experiences, with the topic “The ‘Good’ Caregiver: Does Filial Care Necessitate Self-Sacrifice?”.  It is hoped that a nuanced understanding of diverse filial practices can inform both policies and programmes to empower family caregivers and their care recipients and enhance intergenerational relationships.
