We encourage researchers interested in population health, longevity, the disablement process and ageing to attend the meeting.
ABOUT THE SCIENTIFIC MEETING
As a sequel event to the pre-conference workshop on 27 May 2015, this Meeting aims to bring together international researchers of Health Expectancy to contribute to research and policy in this area. There will be
KEYNOTE LECTURE: THE GEORGE MYERS LECTURE
The keynote lecture titled, “Disability Experience and Measurement”, will be delivered by Professor Lois M. Verbrugge, M.P.H., M.A., Ph.D., from the Population Studies Center, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan.
Top themes of international research on disability in the past two decades are discussed. They include disability onset, recovery, and persistence; disability trajectories; preclinical/subclinical disability; physical environment and disability; technology and disability; population disability trends; compression of disability; and disability among very old persons. Each theme is highlighted by a research example. Turning to measurement, Professor Verbrugge shall discuss traditional measures of disability, new longer and shorter measures, and composite ones like DFLE (disability-free life expectancy), noting their merits. Contemporary models of disablement are presented, ranging from images to formal theories. The lecture ends on how scientific research really helps medical/rehabilitation professionals, healthcare program staff, and policymakers reach goals of enhancing functional lives of individuals and populations.
