PaRental Experience with Care for Children with serIOUS illnesses (PRECIOUS)

INTRODUCTION

The PaRental Experience with Care for Children with serIOUS illnesses (PRECIOUS) instrument is a validated 45-item parent-reported experience measure assessing the quality of care for children with serious illnesses across healthcare settings.

The instrument takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and supports comprehensive evaluation of parental perspectives on care delivery. Hundreds of multi-disciplinary experts and parents of children with serious illnesses have contributed to its development and validation.

The validated 10-item short-form (PRECIOUS-SF) can be completed in less than 3 minutes. PRECIOUS-SF offers a quicker but less detailed assessment and can be incorporated into routine clinical assessments to obtain regular, timely assessment of service provision.

Sites may consider starting with PRECIOUS-SF for routine use. Where scores suggest potential gaps in care, or where more detailed evaluation is required, the full PRECIOUS instrument may be more appropriate.

Both measures assess quality of care across healthcare settings (e.g. hospital, community, home), multidisciplinary care contexts, and throughout a child’s illness trajectory.

HOW TO ADMINISTER AND SCORE

Both PRECIOUS and PRECIOUS-SF are self-administered parent-reported questionnaires. Instructions for respondents are included within each instrument.

Each instrument generates scores for individual domains (subscales) of care quality. There is no overall total score.

Conversion algorithms are available to estimate PRECIOUS domain scores from PRECIOUS-SF responses, enabling:

  • comparison across studies
  • benchmarking across sites
  • flexible use of short and long forms within the same programme of work

Responses are rated on a 5-point Likert scale:

Score RangeInterpretation
0 to <1Care processes rarely or never occur.
1 to <2Care processes seldom occur.
2 to <3Care processes inconsistently occur.
3 to <4Care processes almost always occur.
