The Expansion of Design Strategies in MedTech
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Design in the medical technology industry, when compared to industries such as consumer electronics, is staggeringly slow and costly. With increasing cost pressures on healthcare systems, mounting disparities in healthcare, and changing regulatory environments, well-designed products and services are in high demand. Product development strategies from other industries have been applied to healthcare with some success, but the medical technology segment is unique in many ways, including multiple stakeholders, high amounts of regulation, the need for clinical trials, and antiquated delivery models.
In this lunch-time seminar, Eric will share some successes (and failures) in practicing, teaching, and studying design in MedTech. He will also share on some recent efforts to incorporate traditional product design methods with a systems engineering approach.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Eric Richardson is Professor of the Practice in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University and the Founding Director of Duke Design Health. His teaching and research focus on design and manufacturing, particularly for underserved populations in medicine. His programs and courses bring together students and faculty from engineering, business, nursing, and medicine.
