Bio

Dr Joyce Koh is a senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Singapore General Hospital. She is from the Trauma Service and has subspecialty interests in Upper Extremity and OrthoGeriatric Trauma. She is usually referred complex trauma especially of the shoulder and elbow with a need for reconstruction or replacement and have also worked in multi-disciplinary efforts with the Plastic surgeons. Research interests include Geriatric trauma with specific interests in atypical femur fractures for which she has numerous publications with good citations, presentations and ongoing collaborative research. She also regularly reviews for established journals including Osteoporosis International, New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Open, JAMDA and British Journal of Anaesthesia. Another area of interest and research is in novel emerging technologies. She and the local team work closely with Professor Bernard F Morrey and colleagues from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN on the early safety and efficacy trials and clinical implementation of a device for image-guided minimally invasive ultrasonic tenotomy for recalcitrant tendinopathy, and has completed the long term follow-up of the technology which is accepted for publication. The technology has successfully translated into clinical use in the USA and the Asean region. Currently, Dr Koh is on the Shoulder Expert Taskforce of the AO Foundation, involved in the design of state-of-the-art upper extremity trauma devices. In December 2024, the team was awarded the AO Technical Commission Innovation Prize 2024 for development of the VA Clavicle System.
 Dr Koh is involved in numerous post-graduate skills training courses as local chair and frequently as regional faculty. She previously served as the Singhealth Surgical Skills Center Musculoskeletal Platform Director, and has been involved in the start-up of the skills laboratory to a level of international excellence, holding many musculoskeletal workshops since its inception to its amalgamation with the current academic pillars. She organized multiple pre-congress Workshops and the inaugural Singhealth-Mayo Symposium was successfully run with the S3 Congress in 2019. She previously served as Regional Program Contributor for Upper extremity trauma with AOTrauma from 2019 to 2022 and is also active as faculty in the Mayo Elbow Club and the Asian Morrey Elbow Club. Currently, she sits on the Residency Advisory Committee for Orthopaedic Surgery with the Joint Commission on Specialist Training in Singapore and also serves as the International Program Editor for Upper Extremity Trauma, representing the Asia-Pacific region for AO Trauma International.

Dr Koh is the Vice-chair for Research of the Musculoskeletal Academic Clinical Program She is the Chair of the Singapore General Hospital Hip Fracture value-based care workgroup and works closely with Singhealth, Duke-NUS and the Ministry of Health, Singapore to drive value-driven care initiatives. She was previously on the MOH Total Hip Value-driven care and OneRehab committees. She is also on the Medical Device Advisory Committee of the Health Sciences Authority of Singapore and currently co-chairs the Medical Devices Committee of the Singapore General Hospital. Regionally, she served as the Secretary of the Asia-Pacific Orthopaedic Research Section, driving Orthopaedic research initiatives in Asean and the Asia-Pacific region. She is the President of the Asia-Pacific Orthopaedic Research Section of the Asia-Pacific Orthopaedic Association, a member organization of the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies, from 2021 to 2023. She is also a current member of the Osteoporosis ACE Clinical Guidance Expert Group with the Ministry of Health, Singapore.
Dr Koh is the current Vice-President of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association.
