Bio

Dr Umapathi N Thirugnanam is the Senior Consultant with Department of Neurology at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology Singapore National Eye Centre. He is Adjunct Associate Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor at both Duke-NUS Medical School and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is visiting consultant at Dover Park Hospice, Singapore. He is also Visiting Professor Yangon University, Myanmar, Honorary Visiting Faculty of Aravind Eye Hospital & Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Visiting Professor (Neurology and community health) in S.E.A.R.C.H. (an NGO in Maharashtra, India) and Honorary Professor of Training Department of the Viet Nam Neurology Association. He was also awarded Honorary Membership to Association of Sri Lanka Neurologists. He was recently elected member of the Hong Kong Neuro-ophthalmology fraternity and the Pan Arab electrophysiology faculty. He is an active exco member in the International Peripheral Nerve Society, Asia Ocean Myology Congress and AOCN-World Congress of Neurology educational and training committee co-chair. He specializes in Neurology and his sub-specialty interests include Neuromuscular Disorders, Electrophysiology, Eye movements , Autonomic Nervous System and Neuro-immunology. He has been active in research through-out his career, the main focus of which is Guillain Barre syndrome, diabetic neuropathy and neuro infections.

Dr Umapathi Thirugnanam’s local and international awards, include 2003 National Day Award-Pinkat Kepujian (SARS “Courage Award”) and 2022 30-year-long service award (Local-SingHealth). He was awarded the SingHealth Distinguished Mentor Award in 2023; and over the last 20 years, a number of teaching awards from NUS, NHG and SingHealth. He has been invited to speak at various international meetings as well as Grand Rounds of prestigious international universities. He has also been actively participating in teaching and service at various hospitals in South East Asia, South Asia, Middle East and Africa over the last 15 years and is recognised for his expertise in Global Health, Neurology.
