AI from ‘Bench’ to Bedside – Perspective in Endoscopy

You are invited to the upcoming Research Grand Rounds on “AI from ‘Bench’ to Bedside – Perspective in Endoscopy”.

About the Event

Technological advancement is happening at such a rapid pace, the difficulty behind advancement in practice is now the chasm of evaluation and implementation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) certainly has a place in modern and future clinical practice, however, the manner at which it is being implemented is still more an art than a science, but an art that cannot be ignored, for it may counter-intuitively detriment the pace of advancement of medical care.

In this talk, Clin Assoc Prof Frederick Koh and Clin Assoc Prof James Li will share their journey of evaluation and implementation of AI in routine endoscopic care. Leverage on their experience to successfully implement more of such technology in other aspects of clinical care.

About the Speakers

Clin Assoc Prof Frederick Koh is a Consultant in the Department of Colorectal Surgery, Division of General Surgery, Sengkang General Hospital (SKH). He is also the Principal Investigator in the SKH Musculoskeletal Regenerative Laboratories and leads the SingHealth Duke-NUS Muscle Health Programme. His clinical and research contributions have also been recognised with Key-Opinion-Leader positions with Global Industrial Partners such as Abbott International, Hyphens Pharma, Pharmacosmo and Medtronic. His collaboration with industry has also allowed SKH to be recognised by Medtronic as a Centre of Excellence for AI use in Endoscopy in 2023. His contributions to Clinical and Research Education have been recognised with the Role Model Certificate of Commendation and Wong Hock Boon Society, Singapore Medical Association Charity Fund Outstanding Mentor Award.

Clin Assoc Prof James Li is a Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist in the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Deputy Chairman of the Division of Medicine and Inpatient at SKH. and interventional endoscopist who specialises in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). Dr Li is currently the Director of Quality Improvement in the Medicine Academic Clinical Programme and serves as the honorary secretary in the Chapter of Gastroenterologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore. Additionally, Clin A/Prof James Li co-founded and currently chairs the Artificial Intelligence for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Study Group (AIGES), Singapore, and conducted the first multicentre clinical trial for artificial intelligence in Gastroenterology in Singapore.

About the Facilitator

Dr Martin Putera is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at SKH and aspiring interventional endoscopist with interest in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). He also currently serves as a member of the Med ACP Quality Improvement committee. He has keen interest in the application of AI in endoscopy and has presented abstracts in Digestive Disease Week (DDW) and has ongoing research in the assessment of the real-world effectiveness of Computer Aided Detection (CADe) in colonoscopy. He is also active in quality improvement, with his project awarded the SKH Top 10 Best QI Project Award 2023 and him being a member of Singhealth Med ACP Best QI Project Team award in 2025.
