ABOUT THE LECTURE:
Pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in approximately 55,000 individuals in the U.S. in 2025. Nearly all of these patients will die from this disease because of the late stage at diagnosis and the ineffectiveness of systemic therapy. Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) of the pancreas are cystic tumors that represent the only radiographically identifiable precursor lesion of pancreatic cancer. Recent data from our group have shown that within a selected group of high-risk IPMN, 25% will develop pancreatic cancer over a 3-year time period. Inflammation has been shown to be strongly associated with malignant progression. Because of these facts, a prospective randomised trial was developed, and recently completed, that evaluated the potential benefit of an anti-inflammatory strategy in these patients. The scientific basis for this trial, and early results, will be discussed.
