ABOUT THE LECTURE:

In her overview talk (30min), Prof. Fiona Watt will introduce EMBO and present EMBO's various offerings to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, to stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and to strengthen scientific interaction and collaborative research between Singapore and Europe. 

"Understanding Cellular Heterogeneity in Human Skin"
ABOUT THE LECTURE:
The interfollicular epidermis is the multilayered epithelium that forms the outer layer of the skin. It is maintained by stem cells that are attached to a basement membrane. While many of the molecular regulators of stem cell behaviour have been identified, how they are integrated and change over time are open questions. Prof. Watt will describe how new insights from single cell RNA sequencing of cells isolated directly from the skin, combined with new experimental models, are helping us to understand the combined effects of cell-ECM adhesion and cell-cell contact in regulating epidermal differentiation.

Prof Fiona Watt
Director
European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO)

Prof. Fiona Watt is Director of EMBO and a group leader at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany. She continues as a professor at King’s College London. Previously, Watt led the UK Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and the Wellcome–MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. For her many outstanding contributions, she has been elected as member of EMBO, the Academia Europaea and the US National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the UK Royal Society and Academy of Medical Sciences.
