Clinical Associate Professor Jason Chang is a Senior Consultant and previous Head of the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the Singapore General Hospital. His clinical area of expertise is in Hepatology with a subspecialty interest in liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, liver cancer and non-invasive markers of fibrosis. He completed his fellowship training in Hospital Clinic Barcelona in the field of portal hypertension and liver transplantation and has been working in the department for more than 20 years.
He is a key opinion leader in the field of liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension and non-invasive assessment of fibrosis including transient elastography (Fibroscan®). He established the Cirrhosis Clinic in the Singapore General Hospital in 2012, providing focused outpatient management for patients with liver cirrhosis. His other notable clinical contributions include initiating the Fibroscan service and the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) service for portal pressure management in SGH. The Fibroscan service was expanded to all other hospitals in Singapore and has now become standard of care for assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease. The HVPG service is a quarternary service to assist clinical decision making in patients with complex liver cirrhosis.
He has a strong academic interest in clinical research and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, hepatitis B, portal hypertension and non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous research grants in the areas of non-invasive assessment of fibrosis, medical education and artificial intelligence assisted assessment of liver fibrosis. His current focus area of research is in artificial intelligence assisted assessment of liver fibrosis and clinical outcomes of liver cirrhosis. As a key opinion leader, he was the first author of the Chapter of Gastroenterologists’ professional guidance for management of patients with liver disease in Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was the first to publish on epidemiology of liver cirrhosis, Fibroscan for assessment of liver fibrosis, portal pressure measurement via hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension in Singapore. He is also actively involved in various advisory boards in the field of liver disease.
A/Prof Chang is a passionate educator at heart and actively contributes in the field of medical education. He currently holds the appointments of Associate Dean and Clinical Education Lead (Medical) of the SGH Campus as well as Assistant Dean (Clinical Clerkships) and Phase 2 Clinical Lead in the Duke-NUS Medical School. He is actively involved in undergraduate medical education as Clinical Associate Professor (Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School), Adjunct Assistant Professor (Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine) and Clinical Assistant Professor (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS). He has been awarded numerous awards for his role in medical education including the AMEI Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Educator in 2015 and the Outstanding Educator Award at the SingHealth GCEO Excellence Awards 2023. His roles in educational administration include Program Director of the SingHealth Gastroenterology Residency Program (2013-2018) and Chairman of the SGH Division of Medicine Education Oversight Committee. He was conferred the Degree of Master of Medical Education (Distinction) from the University of Dundee in 2021.
In the field of leadership and administration, A/Prof Chang was Head of the SGH Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology from 2018 to 2024. During his tenure as Head, he led the department towards expansion of clinical services and introduced a structured administrative service. He served as Executive Committee member and previous Treasurer of the Gastroenterological Society of Singapore (GESS) and is an active member of the Residents Advisory Council (RAC) which oversees the professional training of gastroenterologists in the country. As Director of Faculty Affairs in the SingHealth Medicine Academic Clinical Program (MedACP) from 2014 to 2023, he championed the educational development of all MedACP faculty and introduced new faculty development initiatives including the MedACP Education Awards and the MedACP Faculty Development Dashboard. In recognition of his contribution to public service administration, A/Prof Chang was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) at the 2024 National Day awards.
