Bio
Professor Chee Soon Phaik is a Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Duke-NUS Medical School. She is a Senior Consultant of both the Cataract & Comprehensive Ophthalmology Department and Ocular Inflammation & Immunology Department at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC).
In addition to her clinical commitments, Professor Chee also serves as group lead member of the Cataract research team at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). She obtained her Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) at the NUS and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh and the College of Ophthalmologists, UK. She subsequently completed her fellowship in Uveitis and Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery at Moorfield's Eye Hospital, London in 1993.
Professor Chee's research interests in cataract include the management of complicated cataracts such as the dense posterior polar cataract, subluxated cataracts, premium intraocular lens implants and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery. In addition to innovations in surgical techniques, she has also designed intraocular instruments which greatly augment surgeons' abilities to overcome difficulties and improve the outcomes in these highly demanding cases. Most recently, she was admitted to the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club.
In the field of uveitis, Professor Chee has been the President of the Asia-Pacific Intraocular Inflammation Study Group (APIISG) since 2013. She is also a member of the International Uveitis Study Group, Clinical Consensus Group (Standardisation of Uveitis Nomenclature) and an International Council member of the IOIS International Council. She has published extensively on Cytomegalovirus infection of the anterior segment, Ocular Tuberculosis, Dengue Maculopathy and Vogt-Koyanagi Harada disease.
She has authored over 200 peer reviewed scientific papers and book chapters and is a member of several editorial boards including Ocular Inflammation and Immunology, Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
She is a much sought out speaker at numerous international, regional and national conferences and has made many presentations on uveitis and cataract and has delivered several named lectures and won medals for her surgeries. She has performed numerous ‘live surgeries’ and conducted many instruction courses locally and internationally. In 2000, she was given the Best Teacher Award in SNEC and in 2005, she became an Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Certified Educator (A.C.E). She was conferred by SingHealth, the Outstanding Clinician 2011 Award and the Singapore Health Quality Service Award 2014 (Gold) for her significant contributions to national healthcare. In 2018, she was elected as a member of the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club and in 2019, she was admitted as a council member of the Academy of Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO). Most recently, she was conferred as the distinguished professor to the SNEC Professorship in Clinical Education in Ophthalmology.
