Dr. Wan-Yee Teo, a clinician-scientist, is Head and Principal Investigator of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Office at SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Center, Singapore. Her group conducts their laboratory research at the Humphrey Oei Institute of Cancer Research, National Cancer Center Singapore. The research focus of her group is in the brain tumor microenvironment, particularly in pediatric brain tumors, and translating research findings in tumor biology, genomics and preclinical testing to bedside benefits for children with brain tumors. She completed her clinical training in Pediatrics and Pediatric NeuroOncology in the USA, and is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics, and the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health in the UK. Her research training was completed in the Cancer Genomics Program at Baylor College of Medicine, USA. Her research combines genomic methodologies and mouse models to study the complex regulation in the developmental biology of brain tumors. An area of emphasis is the preclinical development of therapeutics for brain tumors using patient-derived orthotopic brain tumor xenograft modelling

EXCERPT FROM PBTRO TEAM MEMBERS & INTERN STUDENTS

“Our work focuses on cell culture and utilises molecular techniques to unravel the cell biology behind the drug effects on brain tumours; this is in line with our team goal to discover effective and novel treatments for the benefit of patients.”

“The most important insight I learnt from this internship was realising the tenacity of character required to become a successful researcher. Their passion for their work, and their grit and perseverance constantly inspire me to work hard in my studies knowing that my study now is not as challenging as the lives of these researchers.”

Education Initiatives

We have embarked on 2 Education Initiatives on SingHealth-Duke-NUS Academic Medical Center, Singapore.

Clinical Professionalism Program @Duke-NUS

Program Lead: Asst Professor Wan-Yee Teo

With a focus on Poster Presentation Skills (Scientific and Clinical Posters), Giving Academic Feedback using DESC Model, Feedback Skills for Junior Doctors, Clinical Teaching Skills for Junior Doctors, Safety and Survival Skills during Residency. This curriculum was developed with Medical Education, Research & Evaluation Department in Practice Course 4, Duke-NUS Medical School. Practice Course 4 has evolved to Clinical Professionalism Program @Duke-NUS. Together with past graduates of Practice Course 4, who are now in their residency/internship at SingHealth, we work towards extending our initiative to selected SingHealth Residency Programs.

Education Material on Safety in Healthcare Research Environments

Program Lead: Asst Professor Wan-Yee Teo

We have developed a short series of education/teaching materials on safety in healthcare research environments for Handling of Sharps, and Basics of IT Security in Healthcare Research Environments. The education slides on Handling of Sharps are being used for workplace safety orientation by National Cancer Center Singapore and SingHealth Experimental Medicine Center, in addition to our laboratory unit at Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Office, SingHealth-Duke-NUS Academic Medical Center.
