“I think the greatest value that Duke-NUS offers in the educational landscape is to show that the highest value isn’t necessarily in a “through train” to success. There’s no shame in having taken a less traditional path. I think it offers a valuable perspective in a society where there often feels like there are implicit expectations on that one should be “settled” in one's career by a certain age, that one should keep pace with one's birth cohort, that academic streaming is a once-and-done thing. I think grappling with being a Duke-NUS student has allowed me to challenge some deep assumptions about my own value as someone who has taken an unconventional path to an arguably conventional outcome.”

“I saw the importance of bringing different fields together to make a real impact. My time in the wards has shown me that combining research, clinical work, and innovation is key to improving patient care.

Yadanar Than Naing

PhD Graduate

“One of my biggest takeaways from my time at Duke-NUS is that growth comes not only from challenges, but also from the people around you. Being part of such a supportive and close-knit community made a big difference in my PhD experience.”

Nur Sarah Binte Ibrahim

MD Graduate

“There were many enriching experiences I had during my time at Duke-NUS, but one of them would have to be being part of a team of 18 students and some faculty members in Project Dove Nepal. This experience was eye-opening, as it allowed me to observe a different healthcare system and rural way of life. It was a humbling reminder that we often do not fully understand the challenges others face. During our time there, we set up multiple free healthcare camps and were received with incredible warmth and generosity by the village community.”

Charles Yau Rong Zhang

MD Graduate

“We are capable of far more than we imagine when placed in the right crucible. Coming in as a non-traditional student, Duke-NUS pushed me beyond my perceived limits, but it also provided an environment where my unique background became a strength. It taught me that while no situation is perfect, when you combine adaptability with the right team and resources, your capacity for growth and real-world impact is limitless.”
