ABOUT THIS LECTURE:
Interprofessional education (IPE) is widely recognised as essential for preparing learners for collaborative practice, yet most programmes continue to rely on learner self-perception surveys to assess impact. This talk will examine why assessing observable interprofessional behaviours is critical to advancing competency-based IPE and interprofessional collaborative practice. Drawing on examples from real clinical learning environments, the session will introduce key principles underlying observation-based assessment, highlight common challenges such as context dependence, feasibility, and rater variability, and discuss design considerations for developing practical observation tools aligned with IPEC competencies. The talk will also explore how observation data can be used to support formative feedback, programme evaluation, and educational scholarship across professions and settings.
