It is estimated Metabolic dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) global prevalence is approximately 25% in adult populations worldwide and affecting around 40% of the adults in Singapore. MASLD refers to a spectrum of worsening disorders progressing from mild steatosis, to Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) and cirrhosis. In some instances, MASLD may progress to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the fastest rising cause of cancer death. Despite the growing prevalence of MASLD, there are no approved clinical treatments for MASLD and lifestyle changes show limited efficacy in attenuating liver disease in certain patients. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop pharmacological interventions to combat MASLD that will require the identification of new targetable pathways. 

Cheen Fei specializes in the study of MASLD with focus in liver lipid metabolism. His research interest is to understand the relationship between circadian rhythms, nuclear hormone receptors, transporters, and hepatic metabolism in physiology and pathophysiology of the liver. His long-term goal is to develop nutraceuticals to improve clinical outcomes of patients with MASH.
