1. Overview

The College Master is a senior faculty member who leads one of Duke-NUS’s Advisory Colleges. In this pivotal role, College Masters shape the professional identity, personal growth, and wellbeing of medical students. Serving as mentors, role models, and stewards of key curricular themes, they foster a nurturing, inclusive environment throughout each student’s journey in medicine. Their influence endures through the strong sense of community they build and the lasting relationships they form, defining the Duke-NUS experience.

2. Work Objectives

  • Mentorship and Guidance: Provide personalised and group mentoring with focus on transitions in medicine, resilience, wellness, career development, and civic professionalism.
  • Community Building: Cultivate inter-year relationships, social unity, and the Duke-NUS spirit, giving students a supportive ‘home within a home’.​
  •  Student Advocacy and Support: Identify and support students facing academic, professional, psychosocial, or financial challenges, working proactively with the Office of Student Affairs and related services.​
  • Role Modeling: Exemplify and promote professionalism, ethics, and medical values, setting high standards for students and peers alike.

3. Key Responsibilities

A. Mentorship & Development

  • Conduct regular small-group and one-on-one mentoring sessions to:
  • Guide students through professional transitions, including white coat ceremonies, dissection sessions, and research year.​
  • Promote resilience, mindfulness, and wellness.​
  • Lead discussions on ethical dilemmas, medical professionalism, and humanities, contextualising with local medico-legal cases and cultural perspectives on topics like death and dying.​
  • Advise on career pathways—clinical, research, education, and non-traditional—including coordination of sharing sessions with faculty and alumni.​
  • Discuss the practice of medicine in Singapore and its evolving landscape.​
  • Facilitate student reflections, including early/final year reviews and time capsule activities.

B. Community & Culture Building

  • Encourage peer mentorship and vertical integration across class years
  • Promote inclusivity and diversity through ‘show and tell’ sessions, celebrating varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.​
  • Facilitate inter-collegiate activities, such as games, community service projects, and social events, to strengthen bonds and school spirit.

C. Student Advocacy and Support

  • Proactively identify and support Students of Concern, coordinating urgent reviews and connecting students with appropriate resources.​
  • Serve as a trusted, confidential and approachable point of contact for student welfare issues, including mental health, burnout, financial difficulty, and discrimination.​
  • Work closely with Student Affairs and the school counsellor to ensure comprehensive student support.
  • Guide students in developing their Individualised Development Plans (IDP) and provide letters of reference as needed.

D. College Administration & Leadership

  • Attend quarterly College Masters meetings to collaborate and share best practices
  • Support College Representatives in leadership and administrative duties including budget oversight, event planning, curriculum delivery.​
  • Maintain accountability (meeting attendance, brief report of meeting topics, feedback).

5. Essential Qualities and Skills

College Masters work in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs, College Representatives, faculty advisors, student leaders, and fellow College Masters to sustain an enriching, responsive environment for all students.

  • ​Senior faculty member (Consultant and above) with experience in medical education, mentoring, and student advocacy.
  • Demonstrated empathy, patience, and commitment to student welfare.​
  • Effective communicator and facilitator, able to inspire trust and nurture growth.​
  • Commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and professionalism.​
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
